The best ETFs and investing FOMO

February 23, 2025

416Years of Freedom Created

When it comes to investing, we all want high returns.

So why not just invest in the best-performing funds you can find?

Well, it doesn’t quite work that way. In this week’s article, I explain exactly why that is.

Interestingly, many investors get this wrong and end up ‘performance-chasing’, which often leads to disappointment.

We’ll also discuss:

  • The reality of the ‘best performing’ funds
  • Making bets and finding the big winners
  • The ‘see-saw’ effect of performance
  • Looking at market cycles
  • How to combat FOMO and stay the course

STRONG MONEY PODCAST

As part of the launch celebration of my new podcast, I’m dropping 10 episodes during Feb. Here’s the episodes that have come out since my last newsletter…

#4: How to Spend More While Still Getting Richer

In this episode, we explore how you can spend more as your wealth increases without derailing your path to financial independence. We’ll also look at the importance of upgrading your mindset as your situation changes, so you can finally stop worrying about money.

Listen now on Spotify, Apple, or on my website.

#5: Do You Need to Own A Home to Retire Early?

In this episode, we dive into whether owning a paid-off home is a necessary part of financial independence. We’ll weigh the benefits of both renting and owning, including some often-overlooked factors. Plus, I’ll share my own personal experience with both options over the years.

Listen now on Spotify, Apple, or on my website.

#6: The Great Divergence (Get Ahead or Get Left Behind)

Here, I explain a phenomenon I’ve named the Great Divergence — the growing divide in society between those who are taking control of their financial future and those who are getting left behind. We’ll explore how this came about, why it’s continuing, and how you can use it to your advantage.

Listen now on Spotify, Apple, or on my website.

#7: Seven Steps to FI That Anyone Can Follow

In this one, I walk you through the key steps to making your financial independence plans come to life. We’ll look at the process of starting where you are now, defining your ideal life, taking control of your finances and putting in place a strategy to get you closer to the freedom you’re aiming for.

Listen now on Spotify, Apple, or on my website.

By the way, I hope you’re enjoying the new format and the content. If you are, I’d really appreciate it if you could share it with a friend or family member to help me spread this message further.

As you can see, the episodes are mostly 15-20 minutes, so it’s really digestible for those new to the topic. As always, thanks for your support!

AUSSIE FIRE PODCAST

For regular people, credit cards probably aren’t the best idea.

But for those who are a bit savvier at managing money, credit cards can come with quite a few perks that can actually bring you financial benefits.

I’ve never had a credit card in my life. But my co-host, Hayden, has. So in this episode, we sit down and I ask him a slew of questions to try and learn about credit card hacking from his experience.

Warning: if you’ve done this before, or you have a half-decent knowledge of credit card hacking, this won’t be useful to you. It’s catered to someone like myself, who’s simply curious to hear how it works and the ways people approach it.

MY LATEST INTERVIEW

After all those podcasts, you’re probably sick and tired of hearing my voice!

But in the off chance that you’re not, I recently chatted with with Those 2 Sisters from the Rich Lady Revolution Podcast.

During the convo, we spoke about:

— How I define financial independence and how FIRE works in practice
— Building wealth without stressing yourself out
— Balancing future wealth vs enjoyment now
— Small actionable steps people can take to start right now

Listen to the interview on Spotify, or Apple.

THOUGHTS OF THE WEEK

Everyone seems to want to fit in. But there’s a special kind of freedom that comes with not fitting in. With being a bit weird. With being someone who people don’t quite understand. With not caring what the norm is and just following your own path.

Don’t buy your dream home too early. It’s an absolute trap. Especially if you also want to be able to invest and create any sort of freedom. But… if you invest and build wealth FIRST, you can have both.

Early retirement is not about removing yourself from society. It’s optimising your life to maximise the enjoyment you get from being part of society, while minimising the downsides. It’s also having the space to figure out how to best contribute without subtracting from other the things you care about. (That said, the option to remove yourself and avoid people is always there too!)
