How to retire early and travel the world

June 8, 2026

759Years of Freedom Created

Most people only dream about retiring early and travelling the world.

Two readers – Kurt & Keryn – are putting that plan into action.

Over a decade ago, they saved $130k and spent a few years travelling full-time across 33 countries.

Now in their mid-40s, after rebuilding from almost nothing in 2019, they’re ready to do it permanently.

In this week’s Strong Money Story, they share:

— How they saved enough to travel for years
— Which countries they like best and why
— What it looks like to live off $100 a day overseas
— The investments that fund Geo FIRE & early retirement
— What this kind of lifestyle could mean for your FI number

There are also lots of photos and a special update from Kurt & Keryn at the end of the article.

STRONG MONEY PODCAST

Car loans are the new mortgage.

The average Aussie household spends $23k a year on cars. That’s like $35k pre-tax income just to get around!

My new podcast breaks down the true cost of car ownership – including what most people don’t see.

I explain how being a bit more sensible can leave you $2m richer over time (without walking 15km for groceries).

AUSSIE FIRE PODCAST

Just because your life changes doesn’t mean your portfolio has to.

When it’s time to live off a portfolio, people think you need to greatly reduce risk or switch to ‘income’ assets.

In some cases that makes sense, but many times it doesn’t. Our latest Aussie FIRE pod fleshes out what to consider and how to match your strategy with your life situation and psychology.

THOUGHTS OF THE WEEK

If you believe in fairness and freedom, you believe in inequality. Some people are smarter. Work harder. Take risks. Make sacrifices. And do things others aren’t willing to do. If you want to be rewarded for your decisions and actions, inequality is inevitable.

You’re far more likely to run out of time than to run out of money. Every week of healthy life you spend just going through the motions is a week you don’t get back. The point is to figure out when you’ve reached enough, to stop delaying your enjoyment of life.

Most people’s financial problems are self inflicted. What we believe and the way we think drives every decision we make, creating the results we get. Over a long enough timeframe, your mentality produces your reality.

STRONG MONEY IN THE MEDIA

I was contacted by Yahoo Finance recently to share my thoughts on how the budget impacts Aussies aiming for financial independence.

You can read the story here.

I shared how it’s been broadly perceived as discouraging and sends mixed messages. I explain when the changes have a negative affect on someone’s ability to retire early.

It was nice to see I didn’t come across overly crazy in the story – you never know with these things! 😉

I was also described as a tradie? First time I’m hearing that a forklift ticket is a trade…

My new book on semi-retirement, transitioning to freedom and learning to enjoy your wealth is out now. Learn more here or at the links below.
