There were some major changes announced for investors. Especially around capital gains tax, negative gearing, and trusts.
Some of it is reasonable. Some of it is questionable. And some of it looks suspiciously like a tax grab dressed up in nicer language.
In this week’s article, I go through what’s changing, how investors might be affected, and what it could mean for those pursuing financial independence.

THOUGHTS OF THE WEEK
I know someone with $10m of investments who drives a 2008 VW Golf. I know others with $100k cars who don’t have a single dollar invested. Most people who look rich probably aren’t. And most people who are rich probably don’t look it. Wealth is usually invisible.
Most people think retiring early requires a paid-off house. False. If you rent, you just need enough invested to cover the rent. If you own, you just need enough to cover expenses, mortgage included. You can own your time without owning your home. Surprisingly few people understand this.
Once you can afford to, the best thing you can do, is nothing. Not literally nothing, but space. Just time to exist. Time to think about your life and how you want to live. It looks like wasted time from the outside, but it might be the most valuable thing you ever do.
